Vocal Coaches
Andrew Greenwood | Andrew Greenwood studied at Clare College at Cambridge, and at London Opera Centre. He was member of Music Staff at Royal Opera 1977-1984, and Chorus Master and Conductor at Welsh National Opera 1984-1990. Since 1990 he has been a freelance conductor, posts including First Conductor at Cologne Opera 1993-95, and Music Director at English Touring Opera since 1996. He has also conducted for WNO, ENO, Royal Danish Opera, Buxton Festival and Chelsea Opera Group, and several orchestras in Britain and abroad. His concerts with BBC National Orchestra of Wales and BBC Concert Orchestra have been broadcast, and he has made recital discs with Dennis O’Neill and Lesley Garrett. His educational work includes coaching and conducting at Royal Danish Academy, Copenhagen, Dartington International Summer School, and NOS. |
Gareth Jones | Gareth Jones, born in South Wales, was a member of the Music Staff of Welsh National Opera from 1990-2008 where he conducted performances of Un Ballo in Maschera, Il Barbiere di Siviglia, Turandot, Nabucco, La Traviata, Ernani, Die Fledermaus, Eugene Onegin, The Yeomen of the Guard, Faust, La Boheme, Fidelio, Billy Budd, The Carmelites, Carmen, Katya Kabanova, The Cunning Little Vixen, Jenufa, Le Nozze di Figaro, Der Fliegende Holländer, Madame Butterfly, La Cenerentola, The Magic Flute and Hansel and Gretel. In 2004 he made his ENO debut conducting The Mikado, which he has also conducted for Vancouver Opera. |
Anthony Negus | Born in Buckingham, Anthony Negus studied at the Royal College of Music, the London Opera Centre and Christ Church College, Oxford. Anthony was a member of the Music staff in Wuppertal and Hamburg from 1970-74 and musical assistant at Bayreuth 1972-73. He Joined Welsh National Opera in 1976. As a Wagner enthusiast from youth he assisted Goodall on Die Walküre, Tristan und Isolde, Parsifal (also the recordings) and Armstrong on Der Ring des Nibelungen. For WNO (1982-86) he has conducted Parsifal, Das Rheingold, Siegfried, Götterdämmerung, Fidelio, The Magic Flute and The Greek Passion.

Michael Pollock | Michael won a Demyship to read music at Magdalen College, Oxford, after which he went to the Royal College of Music to study piano accompaniment with Roger Vignoles. He has accompanied Dame Kiri Te Kanawa in recitals in the UK and on tour to the Far East, and has recently performed with her in France, Belgium, Norway, Israel and Jersey; he has also accompanied Bryn Terfel in the UK, Norway, Asia and Australia, as well as in the Amsterdam Concertgebouw. Other singers whom he has accompanied in international recitals, broadcasts and recordings include Dame Anne Evans, Rebecca Evans, Nuccia Focile, Katarina Karnéus, Christopher Maltman, John Mitchinson, Anthony Michaels-Moore, Dennis O’Neill, Ailish Tynan and Willard White; on three occasions he acted as official accompanist for the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World competition.
Michael’s extensive operatic experience includes working closely with Sir Reginald Goodall on Die Walküre, Tristan und Isolde and Parsifal ; Pelléas et Mélisande with Pierre Boulez; plus a wide range of operas with Sir Charles Mackerras, Sir Richard Armstrong and Carlo Rizzi, as well as numerous productions for Music Theatre Wales. Having been WNO’s first vocal consultant, he is now consultant coach for the ENO Young Singers Programme; in addition to being a regular guest coach for the Wales International Academy of Voice, he also coaches the singers on the opera courses at RAM, RCM and RWCMD. |
